To test for nutritional deficiencies, I utilize blood testing and sometimes urine testing. For the convenience of my patients, I draw blood in my office. If a first morning urine sample is required, I will ask the patient to collect the sample at home and bring it in.
I test intracellular nutrients because I want to know which nutrients are actually getting into the cells. Some people have difficulty with the absorption of nutrients into their blood and others may be able to absorb them but not utilize them. There are a couple common genetic defects that make if difficult for some patients to convert certain nutrients to their active form. Testing intracellular nutrients enables me to identify those patients who have deficiencies in nutrients on a cellular level.
I utilize a few different labs for intracellular nutrient testing, and choose the lab based on the lowest out-of-pocket expense to the patient for the type of health insurance they carry.
